Indigenous Peoples of Canada
Understanding the Diversity
In the vast landscapes of Canada, there exists a rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. The term "Indigenous peoples" or "Aboriginal peoples" encompasses three distinct groups: First Nations, Métis, and Inuit.
First Nations
First Nations, formerly known as Indians, have a deep-rooted connection to their ancestral lands and distinct cultural practices. They are the largest Indigenous group in Canada, with over 600 First Nations bands across the country.
Métis
Métis are a unique people who emerged from the intermarriage between First Nations and European settlers. They have their own distinct cultural identity, language, and worldview.
Inuit
Inuit, also known as Eskimos, are the northernmost Indigenous people in Canada. They inhabit the Arctic regions and have adapted to the harsh climate and environment.
